Yes, We Can!

This phrase is used very cheekily in the plot which does involve characters from the land of milk, honey and dollars. "Phas Gaye Re Obama" is a racy, satirical crime caper that is set in the backdrop of the recession in the United States and its fallout in India. The film has mostly relative new comers to the big screen except for Rajat Kapoor and Neha Dhupia/ Amole Gupte who plays the role of one of the villains in "Kaminey" plays a short role. If you understand some of the rural dialect of Hindi, you are likely to get more out of the movie. The way the movie shapes up in the beginning and the background score, one can guess that all will be well in the end. But one keeps hoping that there is a plausible close-formed ending. Writer-Director Subhash Kapoor does it fairly admirably. This movie falls in line along with the other satire to come out this year - "Tere Bin Laden", that exploits current affairs into an entertaining script. Both these movies rely on a daring premise and then wriggle out in the end without getting too trivial. It does take some thoughtful writing.

The current crop of writers are thriving on the fact that many of the promising film makers have opened their production houses and are willing to take a chance to make entertaining but smart movies. Similar to the scenario in the late 70s and early 80s when NFDC produced a lot of movies written by Film Institute graduates such as Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Sudhir Misra, Kundan Shah and others. This movie affirms that there is some original writing talent in the Indian Movie business. Maybe We can !
